Man’s Mission To Run 52 Marathons In 52 Weeks

A man from Lichfield completed a challenge which saw him run a mammoth 52 marathons in as many weeks to raise vital funds for us.

Over 10-months, 34-year-old Chris Caddy, had run 43 marathons and raised over £2,115 to support our hospital’s sick kids.

It all began when Chris, a train signaller for Network Rail, felt it was his time to give back to charity and, as a proud dad to his seven-year-old daughter, Mia, it made sense to support one of the Midlands’ most iconic children’s institutions.

With his cause decided, Chris turned his attention to the challenge. A keen runner with a couple of marathons under his belt, Chris wanted to inspire Mia and push himself by taking on a challenge so tough even he didn’t know if he’d be able to complete it – 52 marathons in a year.

Since he’d started his challenge, Chris had run marathons along a trusted 26.2 mile route around Lichfield, taken part in official events such as the Manchester, Leeds and Loch Ness Marathons and even taken his running abroad to complete the Paris and Barcelona Marathons. Mia had even taken part in a junior run to show her support.

Chris said: “Some of my marathons had been tougher than others but overall, it was an enjoyable journey. A particular favourite was on New Year’s Eve when I ran at midnight, amongst all the fireworks!

“Thankfully Mia has never needed Birmingham Children’s Hospital but I know lots of children who have and we’re just so lucky to have such a fantastic facility on our doorstep in case we ever do. I’m so grateful to everyone who donated to help support the incredible work that goes on at the hospital.

At more than 80 per cent of the way through his challenge, Chris faced the final push to the finish line, which he completed in Lichfield’s Beacon Park with friends and family joining him for a lap or two.

Annie Eytle, Head of Public Fundraising at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “One marathon is no mean feat but Chris is so close to completing 52 – a whole year’s worth! We were cheering him on as he crossed his very last finish line.

We’re so grateful for Chris’ commitment and determination in this gargantuan challenge. He raised a phenomenal amount, which will go on to help us continue supporting our brave patients and families.”
