We’re partnering with the BAFTA-winning charity MediCinema to build a cinema inside our hospital, which will provide meaningful respite from the wards and improve wellbeing for both our long and short-term patients and their families.

Bringing the magic back to Hospital stays

Almost 20% of our inpatients have to stay in our hospital for up to three weeks every year and some even longer. That’s three long, consecutive weeks of intensive treatment, where patients are often isolated from their parents, siblings and friends.

Lengthy hospital stays can affect an entire family’s mental health, with feelings of fear and anxiety having a direct impact on a patient’s recovery.

Research has proven having access to a cinema experience while in hospital can transform physical, mental and emotional health. It can also increase a child’s resilience.

Bringing the magic of the movies to the hospital will create positive experiences for thousands of patients and their families every year and at no cost to them or the NHS.

A big screen with a bigger purpose

Located in the heart of our hospital, we will convert a non-clinical area into a state-of-the-art MediCinema, complete with 86 purpose-made, movie-style seats, and space to accommodate wheelchairs, hospital beds and medical equipment to ensure it is accessible for all.

Once complete, it will be the largest MediCinema in operation, expecting to provide around 260 screenings per annum and putting smiles on the faces of an estimated 5,000 attendees every year.

Thanks to generous donations received since we launched the appeal, we have reached our initial £1m target, which will cover the build of the cinema, as well as the operational costs to keep it running for the first 12 months.

Keeping the magic alive

To make sure we can provide magical experiences for our patients and families for years to come, we’ll be keeping our appeal open to continue fundraising.

With your help, our sick kids and their families will be able to create special memories and feel less isolated during long periods of time in our hospital.
